Welcome to Northwest Montessori
Welcome to Northwest Montessori Preschool, we're a community of diverse families and educators that respect that every child learns differently & at their own pace. We are proud to offer nurturing, non-competitive, multi-age classrooms with an emphasis on social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. Together we help develop children into independent life-long learners. Our Preschool is unique in this community, so if you think you might be interested in this type of education for your child, we’d love to meet you on one of our tours, it’s our opportunity to show you just how wonderful Montessori can be.
What is Montessori ?
Dr Maria Montessori, developed her unique method of educating children over a professional career that spanned over fifty years. The Montessori approach was developed through intense scientific observation of children from many ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds from birth to maturity.
Montessori classrooms provide a specially crafted learning environment where children are able to respond to their natural tendency to work. Children have an innate passion for learning, and the Montessori classroom encourages this by giving them opportunities to engage in spontaneous, purposeful activities with the guidance of trained staff. Through their work, children become confident, responsible, independent learners, who trust in their own abilities. They develop concentration and joyful self-discipline inspiring them towards a lifelong love of learning. It is for this reason that it is often referred to as an ‘aid to life’. As an educational system, it is used in over 22,000 schools worldwide, and has a longer track record of success than any other educational approach in the world.
This area helps children develop muscular coordination, enabling movement and the exploration of their surroundings. They learn to work at a task from beginning to end, and develop their powers of control and concentration.
Sensorial materials serve as tools for development. Children build cognitive skills, and learn to order and classify impressions by touching, seeing, smelling, tasting and listening, and exploring the physical properties of their environment.
The Montessori environment is rich in oral language opportunities. The sandpaper letters help children link sound and symbol effortlessly, encouraging the development of written expression and reading skills.
Mathematical activities help children learn and understand the concepts of maths by manipulating concrete materials. This work gives children a solid understanding of basic mathematical principles, prepares them for later abstract reasoning, and helps to develop problem-solving capabilities.
Cultural learning involves geography, biology, botany, zoology, art and music. Children learn about people and cultures in other countries with an attitude of respect and admiration. The art and music programs give children opportunities to enjoy a variety of creative activities, as well as gain knowledge of the great Masters (e.g. Mozart, da Vinci, etc).
We teach children computer programing concepts in a Montessori way; hands on, self correcting & without the need for a screen. Our programing curriculum also integrates elements of our literacy, numeracy & cultural program.

“This is a beautiful preschool and I will recommend everyone I know to bring their children here as we have had such a great experience and seen first hand how it impacts the children in a positive way. I can not speak highly enough of Northwest Montessori. Our children are confident and have a great start to their schooling by attending a preschool such as this.”
"Very happy with my child's development. She is more than school ready & has had the privilege of being in a real Montessori environment & that's all I could ask for. I'm so sad that she is finishing this year!"
"We love Northwest Montessori! Thank you to all staff for your professionalism and dedication to the children."
"The experience, professionalism and warm nature of the teachers make Montessori Essendon so great. It's the only place I wanted to send my child for their pre school learning."
"After a rather traumatic start we have found the staff to be extremely helpful and understanding and the transition for him to be easy. He now loves going to pre school and asks every day if he is starting back for the new year. His capacity for learning has increased and his vocabulary has broadened greatly in the past 6 months. We are very happy with his progress and the whole school in general. The teachers are kind and loving as well as providing the education that the 3-5 year olds crave."
"I am very satisfied. My children are learning very good life skills that will endeavour them for the rest of their lives. "
This school has been a wonderful developmental context for my child, who has some special needs.
The staff and teachers are fantastic and really care and by the end of the year you will see your child grow with confidence.
My child has been given the opportunity to build a strong foundation for learning, in a super supportive environment, that gets them ready for school. Thank you so much!
The formative years are the most important to invest energy, education and sensitivity in. It wasn't until my son commenced at Northwest Montessori that I was able to fully grasp what the Montessori teaching and theory was all about and the advanced opportunities provided to children that will assist them throughout life.
We are so happy with out decision to send our son to Northwest Montessori. The first 5 years of their life is very crucial, their brain is like a sponge and it is definitely worth it.
I can see the difference compared to other kids that go to a normal Kindie. I love that our class is so diverse, with great exposure to other cultures and languages. Thank you to the Teachers ,Jayanthi , Sharifa, Daniella, and Rosari for their hard work and patient in dealing with our son. We are definitely going to send our second child to Northwest Montessori.
Our daughter has been welcomed into this pre school with open arms, and has settled in really well. For the first time, we see our daughter willingly go into her classroom and we need to call her back for a goodbye cuddle. This is an amazing feat given our daughter is very shy! I cannot recommend this preschool enough. They are very organised, have quality teachers and learning materials, and promote good behaviours. Finally the management team are very friendly and inviting to all children and parents. Looking forward to another year at Northwest Montessori!

Montessori & Tech
What do you think Montessori would say about Technology if she was alive today ? Would she condemn it, as being overly commercialised and abstract? Or would she embrace it, recommending the purchase of iPads in all of her schools?
